Spider veins and small leg veins are common and usually harmless, but many people want them to look less noticeable. We offer injectable sclerotherapy with Asclera (polidocanol) and 1064 nm Nd:YAG laser treatment.

Injectable Sclerotherapy with Asclera

Asclera (polidocanol) is an FDA-approved sclerosing agent. A small amount is injected directly into the vein with a fine needle, irritating the vein lining so the vein closes. Over time your body absorbs the treated vein and it becomes less visible.

FDA-approved for

• Uncomplicated spider veins (up to 1 mm) in the legs

• Uncomplicated reticular veins (1 to 3 mm) in the legs

What to Expect

• Each vein is injected individually

• Compression afterward: 2 to 3 days for spider veins, 5 to 7 days for reticular veins

• Common effects: stinging or cramping, bruising, temporary redness or swelling

Asclera has not been studied in varicose veins larger than 3 mm.

Which Option Is Right for You?

Both treatments reduce the appearance of small leg veins. The better choice depends on the size, color, and location of your veins, your medical history, and your preferences. Sclerotherapy may fit if you have spider or small reticular veins and are comfortable with injections. Laser may fit if you prefer to avoid needles or can't have polidocanol. Some people use both.

Safety Information

Not everyone is a candidate. Asclera should not be used if you are allergic to polidocanol or have an acute blood clot condition, and we generally recommend waiting until after pregnancy. Possible risks include bruising, pain, skin discoloration, new tiny vessels (matting), allergic reaction, and rarely, tissue damage or blood clots. Laser risks include blistering, pigment changes, and, rarely, scarring. Veins that are painful, swollen, or associated with skin changes may need a medical evaluation first.

1064 nm ND:YAG Laser

The Nd:YAG sends focused light energy through the skin to the targeted vessel. The vessel absorbs the energy and heats, which damages its wall so the vein can close and fade over time. There is no injection into the vein.

What to Expect

• Short pulses of laser light with a snapping or warm, stinging feeling

• Cooling is used to protect the skin

• Common effects: temporary redness, swelling, or bruising

Laser may be an alternative if you'd rather avoid injections or can't have sclerotherapy.

What to Expect During Treatment

Your visit starts with an evaluation of your veins and medical history. We'll discuss your goals and help decide whether sclerotherapy, laser, or both are appropriate.

Treatment is performed in our office by a licensed medical provider. Treated veins fade gradually over weeks, and more than one session is often needed. We'll give you instructions for compression, activity, and sun protection.

Results vary. Multiple treatments are often needed, and treated veins may not clear completely.
